As part of the Storytelling series at Kaneko, tbd. dance collective engaged the audience in an evening’s length exploration of how movement conveys meaning.  The artists’ performance deconstructed the creative process of storytelling through dance using structured improvisation, site-specific choreography, and emotional representation through movement.

The event was centered around the premiere of One Day, One Month, One Year - a short film directed by Nik Fackler. Guided by the sounds composed and performed live by Graham Patrick Ulicny, tbd. created movement installations throughout various rooms within the building that drew inspiration from scenes, concepts, and the storyline within the film. The performance acted as an abstracted version of the film, meant to be viewed as a live introduction in order to play with how the story was told. Dancers concluded the performance in front of a screen, performing a final gesture sequence pulled directly from a scene within the film, and collapsing just as the film began.

 One Day,

One Year

Movement is one of the most powerful tools of communication we possess.  Dance is movement infused with imagination.  It is a universal language that allows us to communicate outside of certain boundaries and social constructs.  Without words, it allows us to externalize personal experience and identity, construct narratives, and convey meaning about the society in which we live.

Within dance, meaning is transmitted through performed emotions, which have the ability to connect an audience to a deeper level of humanity.  Emotions are recognized not just through the dance, but also through the qualities of movement universally associated with feeling.  Perceptions of emotion allow members of the audience to construct their own narratives, extract meaning, and ultimately, relate to the dancer and one another on the shared experience of living.
