ÆFFECT, originally set to premiere at KANEKO in March of 2020, was canceled a week prior to opening night due to rising safety concerns related to COVID-19. After 20 months, the performance finally took the stage during tbd.’s 2021 fundraiser event at a new location, The Harris Building, on 14th & Howard Streets. The performance featured the work of 7 different choreographers, with original music by Dereck Higgins and Graham Ulicny, and a cast of 12 movers from the Omaha-Lincoln metros.
The development of ÆFFECT began in the late winter of 2019 as part of The MOVEMENT Series, in partnership with KANEKO. tbd. was commissioned to create a performance during Influence - the 2019/2020 exhibition celebrating and highlighting the importance of collaboration, change, and the impact we have on one another in creative communities. When conceptualizing the performance, tbd. was inspired by many aspects of the space itself and the artists within the exhibition, particularly the work of ceramicist Juan Sanchez. This inspiration led to a collaboration with Kevin Bullis, who sculpted compact foam into the large, sculptural pieces seen primarily in the first half of the performance, and in the image above
In December of 2019, tbd. began recording experimental sounds generated through their own movement in the studio. These sounds were then incorporated into, and expanded upon through the original music created by Dereck Higgins and Graham Ulicny. These sounds became a defining theme of both the movement and conceptual elements of the show.
